در سال 2005 گروهی از توسعه دهندگان سیستم مدیریت محتوای مامبو از تیم توسعه مامبو جدا شده در قالب گروه دیگری به نام "Open Source Matters" اقدام به انتشار آن تحت نام جدید جوملا (نسخه 1.0) کردند.
